  Not About That Life [Acceptance]
Posted by: Ruen - January 13, 2019, 09:32:32 PM - Replies (6)

[OOC: Seeking acceptance or enslavement at the borders, come what may]

Snow-capped mountains had always been a favored climate of the wolf. She thought her white fur blended just beautifully with fresh powder. Wasn't it grand how she could travel so scarily seen amongst a backdrop of white? Yes, her lush coat was quite a sight to behold- If you were lucky enough to spot movement against the darker shadows of pine and spruce. She stepped lightly, paws gingerly parting a path into the frigid forest. A pack lay somewhere beyond the hills ahead; Ruen could smell them sure as she could hear the obnoxious squirrel chattering high above.

Red eyes lifted to the pointed trees. "Dreadful little beast," she commented, ears flicking back in a vain attempt at dismissal. Yes, yes, there's a wolf below- Everyone could hear his squealed alarms. If only he would scitter right on down that tree, then she'd really give him something to holler about. He had probably just ruined her chances at lunch- If they were near, any mice or birds in the area had fallen silent. How she loved a good cardinal or a bluebird now and then; difficult to catch, but oh so rewarding to crunch into and savor. Guess she'd go hungry, but then again, perhaps it was wise not to hunt so close to packlands.

Instead, Ruen forged on through the snowdrifts. The scent of the pack wafted closer with each step, so she entertained the idea of a visit. Who might call such a place home? The wolf paused to assess her surroundings. Perhaps in summer, this sleepy forest might transform to lush greenery, thick with rabbits and young fawns. Ah, she hadn't tasted the luxury of larger prey for quite some time. It's simply too much effort to hunt down a deer by oneself, and the odds of success were slim to none alone. In a pack, however, surely it would be easier to dine on the richer of red meats. Would it be hard work though? See, wolves in packs were obligated to work and look after the well being of the group, and well, Ruen's just not about that life.

A sudden gust of frigid wind pulled against her coat. The wolf squinted into it, bracing herself. If not for food, then shelter must surely be the next impetus behind joining a pack. This place was a whole new kind of cold; She liked it. Snuffing snow from her whiskers, the girl straightened and headed closer to the borders. If anything, it might be interesting to see what they called themselves- Why they were who they were. Besides, what's the worst that could happen? She could leave anytime.

Wait. Was that movement? There... Between a broken, bare pine. Lightening must have struck it clean in the middle some time ago. It had split ten feet up and the top half had long since fallen to the ground, now covered in snow and ice. The bark at the split lay splayed open and half connected, creating the point of an upside down 'V' between the two halves.

Her head tilted, but the falling snow made it difficult to see if someone might be lingering near the gnarled branches of the splintered tree. She waited a moment more, then decided she might as well address this shadow. If it was nothing but a tangle in the branches, she might as well be speaking to the wind. No one would know.

Ruen cleared her throat expectantly to drawl in idle fashion, as if bored or amused, "If by chance I'm correct, and there is someone lurking just ahead- Why don't you introduce yourself, dearie~" Proud and poised, she arched her neck to peer into the haze. It's horribly rude to creep from the shadows, you know. What a terrible first impression of this place. My, hopefully this pack wasn't all so garishly insolent.

Eli found himself alone again. It was an odd feeling, being alone surround by countless fellow canines, but barring one interaction with a talkative pup those canines had proved to be jerks. They ranged from the innocently under educated to the flagrant assholes, but it made life hard on any aspect of the scale. It was a blessing when Gaven had asked him to stay with him at his camp, maybe out of pity, but maybe out of really wanting someone there to watch his stuff. Either way the dog wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. But the elven man had been gone for some time now, and even the spirits who were usually a bother didn't come to pester him, perhaps lulled to sleep by the thick layer of snow on this plane. Eli found himself leaving the camp behind for now and venturing into the highlands to hunt. Surely there was prey where he lived, but it was loneliness that force the tripod out of hiding. But why, he thought to himself, why will meeting someone else be any different now? He didn't care. Desperation and haunting memories of his last winter holed up in solitude drove him forward.

There was a decent amount of snow in Gemini. It would have been nearly up to his elbows if it hadn't been crusted over. Eli easily traversed the land, even in parts where he had to plow through. Stomach grumbled simultaneously with his nose picking up the scent of a rabbit. Tracking was what he was bred for, finding it was no problem. The lucky little bastard was gifted with a coat to blend in with the snow every winter. The dog wished he could do the same, though for a brief second wondered what he'd look like all bleached out. Such thoughts were for another time, now it was time to feed. The rabbit, it seemed, as the same idea as it nibbled on some branches, distracted as any prey would allow itself to be. Eli made his move, and it looked good for him. The rabbit started to zig zag as he drew near enough to grab his meal when the crust gave way. Eli gasped in surprised but tried to keep up the pace but the sudden change in terrain was a game changer.

"No!" the dog charged through the snow as the rabbit outpaced him, disappearing into the land of white. He knew when he was beat. "Damnit!"

There was no use expending more energy on this. Eli slowed, looking for a place where he could climb back on top of the snow. Once he did he would sit, looking uselessly in the direction of the fled rabbit. Thankfully the tripod wasn't at a time where he was starving, but it was still frustrating.

MONSTERS OF THE NIGHT
Chapter Two
Caries

The zone around the All-Mother’s statue still remains the only place that provides a shelter from the corruption. But it is creeping ever closer, night after night. Sometimes screams can be heard within the woodlands, and any brave enough to venture out would find large scratch marks on the tree trunks and engraved in the large rocks.

But no one can find anything.

One night, the crows suddenly start to caw in excitement again. Hiraeth is suddenly alive with activity, and the statue of the All-Mother appears to have grabbed their attention this time. ”They’re coming! They’re coming!” The birds cry, as the bushes around rustle with growls. Suddenly, they all come charging out; black and white and silver.

The badgers seem to be in pain, the silver blood clotting in their fur. But they are in a rampage, their eyes all black and bleeding, their nose and mouth dripping. They outnumber the members of Hiraeth two to one - but maybe the All-Mother can help her children.

(Their fury seems to be unfocused, as likely as they are to attack the wolves, they could very well turn on each other).

There is ONE EVENT in Hiraeth:
Corrupted badger attack
Monster sighting will happen during the attack.

MONSTERS OF THE NIGHT
Chapter Two
Caries

Whatever haunts Saboro, it appears to hide in the mountains. It hides in caves and moves through tunnel systems, perhaps seeking refuge from the snow that continues to settle outside. The black blood continues to turn up here and there in the snow, it’s foul stench continues to linger.

One night, all hell breaks loose.

The Saborans can wake up to their world shaking, an eruption of events that could end in catastrophe. A herd of a hundred charge down from the mountains above, a stampede of rams that bleed black from their eyes, nose and mouth. The snow to the left of them begins to collapse in its structure, falling and tumbling down below in an avalanche. But the herd don't seem to realise, their focus seems confused and muddled as the herd splits and heads in multiple directions.

A good number get swept up in the avalanche, others trip and fall and are then trampled to death by the rest. Once everything has settled, there is only a small group remaining. Around 6 rams are all that remain of the hundred; the rest buried in a frozen grave or left as mangled carcasses on the mountainside. But the 6 that remain are still dangerous, attacking each other and anything that comes close.

Something lurks up near where the avalanche had originated; a huge hulking figure covered in dense fur that lets out a challenging roar before making its move to leave.

(Black blood leaks down the snowy slopes).

There are TWO EVENTS for Saboro:
Corrupted Rams fighting near the lake
Monster sighting up in the mountains.

MONSTERS OF THE NIGHT
Chapter Two
Caries

Nardir’s situation does not improve as the nights go on. Mother Moon still screams, white blood still rains from the sky, and the mutilated bodies still appear dumped on the fields. Prey is still scarce, and the smell of rot and decay still remains.

One night, things seem to escalate.

Within the Shenandoah Meadowlands - where the body pieces were first found - stand the last remaining two members of a herd of horses. They rear up onto their back legs and cry out, their movements aimless and aggressive; randomly lashing out to kick at the air with their back legs. White blood is splattered all over them, but what comes out of their eyes, nose and mouth is black. They do not appear to be able to communicate anymore.

Around Moonstone Lake, the screaming never ends. The dark sky seems to be full of shooting stars at a first glance, but the realisation comes quickly, as bats in swarms of thousands circle around the lake. Parts of their body is covered in speckles of white blood, and they throw themselves at anything nearby: some crash into trees, others spiral and fall into the lake itself. As more and more bodies fall into the lake, the lake turns darker and darker.

(If it continues, the water will be tainted for a long time)

There are many scurrying little feet at Vaidya’s Garden. Raccoons appear to have snuck in and taken over, tearing herbs up from the ground and fruit from the trees. Some seem to gorge themselves, eating anything they can get their little hands on; others try to make a run for it with what they’ve taken. Their eyes have not yet gone completely black like the other creatures that terrorize the pack, but they still bleed ink from their noses and mouths.

There are THREE EVENTS in Nardir:
Corrupted horses
Corrupted bats
Nearly-corrupted raccoons

The monster sighting will occur randomly in one of these events.

MONSTERS OF THE NIGHT
Chapter Two
Caries

The rain is heavy, the night is dark, and screams ring out. It is difficult to see through the intensity of the downpour - the storm is relentless in it’s fury. Something charges through Gemini’s territory, reckless and dangerous, squealing in anger. Small groups of wild boars rampage about, their eyes completely black and the same tar leaking from their nose and mouth. Their fur is covered in the ink blood that was found on the carcasses on the beach, but the boars never stop squealing.

(Like they’re in pain).

Two stumble around the faerie pools, sometimes crashing into each other and dirtying the pools more and more with their behaviour. Another two attack the castle that stands tall in the centre of Gemini. They bounce off of it’s walls again and again, but they never stop. They continue to charge, the noise echoing through the forest and fields.

But those near the Glass Fields spot something worse. Lightning strikes light up the land - the only visibility the night can provide in the storm - and they catch a glimpse of something large, with multiple black eyes that stare back with white irises. With every flash, it appears a little further ahead.

(It is moving back beyond the wall, and fast)

There are THREE events for Gemini:
Two corrupted boars in the Faerie Pools
Two corrupted boars attacking the Dilapidated Castle
Monster Sighting by the Glass Fields.

MONSTERS OF THE NIGHT
Chapter Two
Caries

The beast remains hidden, lurking through the shadows of Alteron’s forests. But it leaves its mark: large hoofprints can be found in different places after each night. Bark from some of the trees has been rubbed away, leaving broken pieces and splinters littered on the ground. Wherever there are tracks, there is blood. The problem seems to be getting worse with each passing night.

Two small herds of deer emerge. A group of three - two does and one stag -  stand amongst the battered flowers of the rose garden. Four more can be found - two does and two stags this time - standing around the edge of Lake Imbrium. From a passing glance, one could mistake them as normal; but stare long enough and no one can ignore the silver muck that stains and sticks to their fur like glue. Perhaps, more worryingly, is that their eyes are black as the void and appears to be bleeding down their cheeks. The same black blood also runs out from their noses and their mouths.

The group in the garden appear content with tearing up the roses and leaving them thrown to the ground, stomping the remains. Those by the lake, however, appear to be bellowing towards something. One of the stags stands in the water itself, and the mixtures of blood ooze out into the lake. They all appear to be focused on the Isles of Crom, and with good reason.

For within the shadows of the trees, the many eyes of the beast stare back - endless black with white pupils.

(The moment someone notices, it will be on the move).

There are THREE events for Alteron:
Corrupted deer group in the Rose Garden.
Corrupted deer group by Lake Imbrium.
Monster sighting at the Isles of Crom.

@Alue
Plum, as per usual, had gotten a new idea. One that required many, many leaves. Thus, she went on a quest. Bouncing from branch to branch, Plum snatched leaf after leaf from the branches as she went, stuffing them into a crudely made pouch hanging from her neck by braided vines. Some of the leaves that she took down by accident got caught in her thick white fur, a few of them even smacking her in the face. Regardless, the child continued her spree of de-leafing tree limbs, proving herself to be stubborn and persistent in even the silliest of endeavors.

That is, until she took a step on the wrong branch and went tumbling from the lower canopy.

She yelped in surprise, trying in vain to keep her leaves from flying from her little pouch before she hit the ground with a hard thump. Admittedly, the fall wasn't too far and the little pup was used to taking tumbles. She was a hardy little thing despite her small and frail figure. However, that didn't prevent her from groaning in frustration when she saw her pouch nearby, its leafy contents scattered around it. Despite her frustration, she calmed herself quickly and went about picking up the leaves and putting them back into her pouch, once again hanging around her neck. Once she was done picking up her mess and kicking away the broken branch, she set off to find somewhere to begin her project.

Sitting in the shade of the canopy with a flock of various birds nearby, the little girl made work of some of the small leaves she'd found. She folded them, working each leaf into a carefully-crafted hat. She was wearing one that was a wee bit too big, dipping over her eyes as she made one for each of her several feathered companions. Hibiscus had caught off, the capybara being subjected to a leafy that that was a wee bit too small. Admittedly, Plum wasn't the best at sizing them. But she was getting better, especially considering almost half of the colorful birds around her were wearing some of her creations.

When she was almost complete with her mini-project, however, she ran out of leaves. Frowning when she reached for a new one and coming up with none, the child sighed and got to her paws. Hibiscus, who had been leaning against Plum as she napped, startled awake, her leaf hat almost falling off. "Be right back, guys!" she chimed, grabbing her leaf pouch and putting it around her neck as she trotted off to find leaves suitable for hat-making. Albeit, she didn't make it far, coming to a stop as she ran right into someone.

Home sweet humid. She smells of flowers and foreigners, but wants only to smell like her. "Sari!" she calls to the dense forest. Jacaranda petals detach from their woven hold as she trots; Miasma remembers this place, and knows where to find her. "Sari!" Excitable as she draws nearer: the roses still smell so sweet. Far better than anything in Inaria. "Sarissa, I missed you. Inaria was lovely-- not nearly so lovely as you of course-- all the purple and puppies." Failing to nose her way into the thorns, she circles to the other side. "I love puppies. They're so small and soft. I wanted to bring you one, but they wouldn't let me. There was one I thought would make the nicest scarf for you..."

She wiggles her way in, smaller than Sarissa, but not nearly so familiar with the place. This likely isn't the intended entrance, but that won't stop Miasma-- not when she's so impatient to see...

There's no one here.

Purple petals pulled by the thorns, the smell of death so inextricable from Alteron, she almost hadn't noticed it here, infiltrating Sarissa's sacred refuge. Ice grips her heart like winter killed the roses.

It smells like someone else.

Miasma backs out, surveys her surroundings. The fragile flowers 'round her neck have begun to dry, crumbling at contact. "S-... Sarissa?"

The dying forest feels so lonely.
