  I am brave (Acceptance)

The sky was darkening as the young female moved through the woods. Good night moon, goodnight world. Hello, darkness, Surik's old friend. The world plunges into the realm of darkness as the light that has touched the earth for many hours disappears, evaporating into the shadows and giving power to the nightlife.
Cool air starts to shift and take form into strong wisps. Blowing and shifting the branches on the trees. The gods of darkness are awakening, sending their minions out to remind those day dwellers, that night is the time for the cold-hearted. It's not for the weak, and weak is not what Surik is. No, she is a strong young lady. She is a strong girl, not a pushover in the least bit. No, she is a sword in the night. Sharp, and double-edged.

Her footsteps slow to a stop and her orange and blue eyes blink in slight confusion. A bridge stands in Surik's way. As well as a scent of a pack. One that she hadn't planned on running into, but, when opportunities arise. Then one must take them and make the best of any and all situations. After all, Suri had traveled a while. Maybe, just maybe, this is the place where she was meant to stay.

So, standing tall. Tail down, posture relaxed, Suri approached the bridge. Being careful to not pass, she comes to the edge. She was a strong woman, she will not show fear, she will not show weakness. She will be strong, she will belong to this place she had stumbled upon. She will make this her home. She will find her true calling.
Then, she stopped moving. Just at the edge of the bridge. Her two different colored eyes looking around for any sign of life. What should she do? Should she call out to this strange pack? Should she just walk in and try to blend in? Nah, that'd be stupid.

Patience, that's what Suri needs right now. She had just stumbled upon this packland, she couldn't expect anyone to come right away. Who knows how large this land is.

A so, she sat and waited.

The sound of the creaking floorboards of the bridge met Suri's ears. They twitched as they listened, they moaned from old age. Screamed stories of days of old. This place must have a long story to tell. That, or there's a lot of ghosts here.

The afternoon was loud and full of life, the fog having been burned off by a summer sun, though the cloud would later settle in with threats of rain. It had taken the female at a steady hobble all morning to get from the hovel to the bone pit. And what little she could see of the sky through a densely packed forest of trees, she could just barely make out that it was at it's highest point in the sky.

Moisture clung in the air and she grimaced, coming to a stop as came upon the meeting ground, golden gaze casting out to the crescent shaped lake that wrapped around the little alcove. The scent of decay and moss was strong here, the forest being particularly overgrown, bones jutted out this way and that, there were even some that stuck out of the water by the bank, tangled in cattails.

There was a fog the extended far out across the lake's surface, forms of waterfowl drifting among the reeds, and hiding behind the boughs and leaves of old willows. Telana would take a seat on a plush piece of moss, soothing her aching joints that had been howling in pain the entire way here. Cursing under her breath, claws would dig little troughs into the soft, wet dirt.

With the upcoming of their announcement, it was pivotal that all parts were played accordingly. Azuhel had a following, Telana was there silently in the shadowy backgrounds as her elder sister ripped the crown off the jaws of a boyking. She was there when all her people chanted Long Live to the age of a dragon. There was some cowardly part of her that feared the same fate. With her sister gone and the triumvirate's reign not yet made official, Alteron was vulnerable, but not just to the outside forces. Her people had shown that they were just as willingly tear down old leaders for the sake of some great change.

In the stagnancy of the land many had left, though many more had stayed behind. Two of which being elites, she wished to know how far their loyalties extended, be it just to Azuhel, her bloodline, or Alteron itself. Her nephew, Cocytus, had a better claim, a better favor, perhaps she could use that to her advantage. She'd turn slightly at the sound of snapping twigs and rustling bushes. Crows cawed and the faint quacking of ducks, followed by a haunting cry of a loon. "Right on time, how punctual of you." Came a catty remark, as the small female pulled herself up into a sitting position, gaze casting to a hulking form.

"Need I remind you why you're here? Chariot?"

  Castle of Roots

Predicaments like this happen.  It is best to avoid them.  At some point some wolves know when they are going right into danger and head for it anyway.  They are prepared for the consequences.  They may be prepared to die as a result.  Going home was a hard journey, but the losses and gain were weighed in his mind for days as he journeyed.  Sara, Snowfluff, was in good paws and the pups would grow in a solid family.  Hakan, the family Doc, would see to their health.  Leader Alana would recover from the blow of losing Nardir under her watch.  It wasn’t her fault.

Aylie.  Life saver.  Despite her troubles, he would never forget the good she had done.

Arik had the makings of a Groundskeeper if he ever saw one.  What was the nickname he was given?

Mercury.  What a warrior.  And a warrior she would remain.  Scary too.

Well it was a great, what, seven years?  And there was so much left to see!

So at the bottom of the mess of roots Adolph found himself in, he hadn’t expected to reflect on his life this.  These fallen trees in old Nardir’s proud forest had now tangled him when he tripped over his tired legs reaching his family.  They came!  The Relic decided to slip away to die without fanfare and here they were.  He just got here and now they were here too!  Was he that slow or were they in Inaria for a short while?  Were they turned away or did they decide to go home instead?  His heart almost gave out hearing them.

And now he was stuck.  Adolph barked a few times, but the roots gave him limited range.  He snarled and let out one rolling bark.  He felt moments of woe in the moments he hung there, but in the end he shook his head.  He decided to laugh a little.

“I just wanted to pass away at home.  When did I become a damsel in distress?”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On the other side of the trees where the communal dens were, an ear flipped up.  Buckshot started.  I know that sound.  Buckshot bolted from his bed of moss--he hadn't made it to the dens, just slumped on the nearest thing he could find-- and scrambled up the structure as fast as he could.

"Keep barking keepbarking keepbarkingkeepbarkingkeepbarking, you'renotdeadyet."

He hadn't told anyone Adolph slipped away.  Maybe he tricked himself into thinking he would show up again like the last time they lived in exile.  He caught his father's scent a couple times on the trek home, but it faded out.  If the old wolf didn't want to be found, no one could stop him.

Once Buckshot made it to the top he gasped.  There were fallen trees scattered about.  If he didn't find him--

"Leader's gonna kill me for not saying anything."

OOC:   So once again, come rescue the old fossil!

Alteron had been taken by some red dragon and her lackeys, or so he'd heard. He'd made his home in the heart of the territory, a sort of tunnel beneath Alteron's roots, a beast that went unaccounted for and unheard of. He'd lived in secrecy for some time--perhaps that was wrong. Alteron had avoided him, awarding him that secrecy.

With the filth he thrived in, with who he was, perhaps it was for the best.

Rolling around in corpses to let the maggots worm into his fur, the flies land on his nose and lolling tongue, letting the stench of rot and decay permeate his fur, his skin. It was more than an unsightly behaviour, it was something othering, distancing himself from society, from everyone. Something wild and feral and terribly wrong. If he melded his scent with that of the jungle itself, perhaps he would disappear, lay beneath the surface, melt into the background, a fixture in the grim scenery of Alteron. Something that screamed and hissed and bellowed, I am not like you.

Dirt flicked his ear free of a particularly explorative fly, nuzzling into the corpse he laid beside, feeling the maggots burst free from the flesh on his snout, growling gently as he watched them wriggle and squirm. The body itself was too far gone to eat, half skeleton, half heady scent that filled the alcove where it rested, the flesh sloughing away as it was slowly infested and devoured. A breeding ground for flies, a playground for Dirt, who gnawed on the bones and lounged in filth. Something in the stomach, (hanging out, entrails strewn and draped upon the brush like silks) had gone and rotted and bloated and was writhing. He watched it with morbid fascination before pressing upon it with his paw, feeling the squirming sac only worm and writhe faster. He pressed down harder, feeling the insects inside beneath his paw, before pressing his thick claws against the organ and t e a r i n g.

The maggots slid free of their prison, over his paws and all over the ground, the smell choking and harsh. He laid himself upon the ribcage of the corpse, feeling the insects wiggling into his fur and belly, pressing his hind paw gently into the flood of maggots at his side, letting them wriggle beneath his pawpads, between his toes. He gnawed on the snout of the skull, the cockroaches nestling in his thick neck fur scuttling towards his shoulders.

He looked a mess, covered in shorn skin and flesh, decaying blood and oils, insects crawling all over him. And what a beautiful mess it was.

A r i k,

Oh, through the wilderness, You and I we're walking through the emptiness
Oh, my heart is a mess, Is it the only defense against the wilderness?

actions - “speech” - thoughts

Large grey paws stood solidly on the bank of the lake. Bright and eager green eyes looked out, searching. He was meant to be born here, he could feel it in his paws. He had been searching and searching and searching for this home. He had been born just after the exile from this place. He had been born with a longing in his paws, a pull at his heart. It had ached him some nights, confused him for years. The stories from his parents filled his head with longing. Even after rejoining the pack of his birth he had still felt like he hadn't reached home yet. Now...

He was very much Home...

As soon as the group broke for settling Arik had run off on his own. The tension of being among so many melted away as he left the voices and rabble behind. Even though he had not been born here or grew up among these trees it was like his soul knew every rock and stream. Everything was new to him and yet so strikingly familiar. The great dire had run through the woods, his large paws making deep fissures into the soft loamy soil. He easily wound his way around the trees and ran until the aching in his heart felt like an ache in his chest for a breath. He finally found his way back to the lake and dens area and slowed to take a drink. The water felt like a cleansing force, like he was drinking the joyful tears of Mother Moon, joyous at the return of her own Bless-ed.

And here he was, the water dripping off his white chin, huffing in the air of the lake where his soul pulled him onward, to the island just a short swim away. He looked back at the dens where everyone was settling. He was Pulled again to explore the island. So he turned back to the island and began to swim, crossing the stream that separated the two soils. His heart beat faster and faster and faster. His breath caught in his throat as his paws made land fall. He could feel it in his bones...

This... was holy land...

The first thing his eyes landed on was a large rock jutting out the water with a very distinct symbolic mark etched into the stone. His breath released as new awe filled him. This was the same kind of stone he had found in The Gassed Lands were the Glowing Tendrils had appeared after the earthquake, but this... He must show someone... Who though?

Mercury... the thought entered his mind as if it wasn't his own. Was he imagining the importance of this? Would she understand this ache he had for this island? The ache in his heart had moved to his toes, yes this was where it had led him after all this time. Would she understand The Pull? He looked back across the water, back toward the dens again. Was he worthy enough to approach the new queen with this? He had not been privy to any of her conversations, he had been quiet for most of the trip and kept to himself for the most part. But she had to see this. If she believed in the Moon as the Mother, she had to see this.

Arik looked back at the symbol on the stone, then back to the mirrored mark on his side. A crescent moon adorned both his flanks.

With one last look at the very distinct symbol on the rock he turned back to the water. He ran with dogged focus to the dens and looked around. Everyone seemed busy, claiming dens and spots and working on unloading sleds, heading off in different directions for exploring and hunting and gathering. He was nearly the tallest one there, and was probably the biggest in this crowd if Byakko was resting. He grew tense again in the crowd. Finally he caught sight of The Dark Moon Queen and approached her, his head low his eyes earnest. He waited patiently so as not to interrupt her. This would probably be the first time they traded words.

When she acknowledged him he would speak softly, his voice deep.

"Pardon... My Queen. I... I feel I must show you something..." He didn't want to seem foolish for speaking about it here. He didn't want Kyra to overhear him talk about a strange island with a Moon Mark and have her laugh loudly and pull everyone's attention to how strange he could be. Would Mercury allow him to lead her away from the crowd? "Please, if you would, could you follow me?" He asked with trepidation.

He would lead her quietly to the water, nod to the island across the water and silently lead her to swim to it. He hoped he hadn't come across like he had any ill intentions to her. He waited for her swim across sitting next to the rock with the mark on it. His paws tingling with anticipation. Did she feel it too?
