⚔ EVE ⚔
SUNBORNE VALKYRIE | #1a9f80

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

- invictus, william ernest henley

Night bled slowly into day, the sun peaking out from behind the mountaintops on the horizon only to be obscured by thick grey clouds. Eve had been restless that night, worries plaguing her mind, worries brought about by memories returning to the surface in the form of hellish nightmares. They amplified the experiences she had once lived, bringing back all of those terrible feelings -- hopelessness, loss, uncertainty. The wolfdog would never admit such things to anyone who asked, perhaps not even to Avery. She would simply chalk it up to old wounds aching in the cold. It wouldn't be a complete lie, either. Eve hadn't ever liked the cold, and in the desert she hadn't had to deal with ice and snow or even frigid temperatures too often. Gemini was another land entirely, though. The winds rolling in off of the sea were ice cold, carrying with them tiny shards of frozen water that had once been sea spray. Eve had not visited the seaside in a while for just that reason.

The valkyrie sighed, hauling herself to her paws and squeezing out of the den she had taken for the night. The morning air felt icy upon her scars, sending a shiver down the woman's spine. She fluffed out her dusty golden fur and pushed on, trying not to focus on just how cold she was. She knew that after a while, her body would adjust to the cold, but until then it was almost impossible to stop her teeth from chattering.

At least it isn't windy today, Eve thought, trying to force herself to see the good instead of only the bad. She began to wonder where Avery was, and how the fire and coal Cavalier was faring in the weather. Better than she was, Eve hoped. To try and take her mind off of things, the wolfdog set off towards the stone wall. She had yet to see all of it, exploring it only when she wasn't plodding along the borders like the guard dog she had become. Eve was surprised at the ingenuity that Gemini had shown in her short time within the pack. Armor and tools, clothing, accessories of all sorts, and then the wall - a feat that the pack was proud of, and with good reason. True that man had built it first, but they had come upon it dilapidated and in ruin. The wolves of Gemini had worked hard to restore it, and improve it even. It was amazing what could be accomplished through teamwork and dedication.

Such things reminded the valkyrie of her time in the care of humans. She had been born among the people and their tents, and had been raised to serve. Eve had done so proudly, working hard to earn her brands, her first scars - but unlike all that would come after, her brand was something the woman could be proud of. They were symbols of honor, earned by those who had shown exceptional dedication and loyalty to their teams. She drew in a deep breath of the crisp air, chilling her lungs and grounding her to the present. Single eye blinked as the woman's muzzle cracked in a smile, her mood improved at least a little. Those were the days.

The sound of frosted-over leaves and grass crunching under the heavy paws of something to her right snapped the Tauro out of her pleasant memories and back into the cold world. She was on edge at first, but after a few cautious sniffs in that direction, Eve settled down. There was only the smell of Gemini, no immediate danger. Still, Eve had not survived by throwing caution to the wind, and she refused to start right then. Muscles tense, Eve called out "Hello?" in a curious tone, single seaside eye searching the nearby undergrowth for any signs of movement.

The new chapter has begun, a new story being written with the delicate strokes of the author's feathered pen. They graced the parchment with the small footfalls of a new star that had been born among a sea of blue. She was ready to start exploring this new world she had entered, her light shining bright enough to guide her. Where exactly? Who knows, but if she could still smell her familiars, she knew home was still around her.

Poppy red eyes were alight with exploration, every nerve ending and fiber of her being feeling the pull to learn more about her home, as well as the inhabitants that called this land the same. Her family were the only true familiar scents, but she was willing to change that. There were so many others here. She knew. She could smell them.

However, the fresh and innocent mind still had much to learn. Her paws, though tiny they may be, fell to the floor in steady thumps, surely alerting anything in the vicinity of her whereabouts. Perhaps that's what she wanted, so new faces that needed to be met could grace her with their presence. The youngster still lacked knowledge of those less kinder than her mother and father. They were so loving and gentle, so everyone else must be that way too! She would learn soon enough, but until then, her steps would be heavily trodden as she bounded through the dried leaves of autumn, frozen over by winter's impending appearance.

Her bounds continued until she could hear the ebb and flow of the waves on the shore. An unfamiliar sound. The child had not wandered this far yet, and for that, she began to feel a sense of uncertainty. Should she go back? Had she wandered too far? Not far enough. Yes, there was still more to find out about her sanctuary, the place she felt safe in. Nothing bad could happen to her, especially since mother and father were here. Thinking of her parents, she clutched the courage they gave her and continued forward, nervous and eager to find the source of the commotion.

"Hello?"

...

Hackles raised on the small body as she skidded to a halt, scarlet eyes wide. She was frozen in place like the leaves around her, as if winter came early. It was an unfamiliar voice, one that sounded...older. Older than mother and father, that is. Unease started to replace the confidence she had earlier. It was her goal to meet new people, but now that she was faced with the task, what was there to do? What should she do? What should she say? The young princess swallowed, toes fidgeting against the leaves in her nervous anticipation. Someone had to make a move, and it may as well be her. She was the one being called out.

Taking a deep breath, she eased her way forward, gently pushing aside the undergrowth that stood between her and the stranger. Slowly, she stepped out, the early morning light revealing her to the lightly colored female. The child stopped as soon as she exited her barrier, poppy eyes taking in the foreign sight before her. She stood rigid as her eyes traveled over the stranger's face, features so unlike her mother and father. Where did her fur go? Where was her eye? Where were her EARS? Her mouth didn't hang agape or anything of the sort, but her eyes were as wide as the full moon, ears slanted back, tail slightly tucked.

Lowering her head, still looking up at the unknown female, she uttered one soft-spoken word. "...H...Hello...."

What crept forward into view was not what Eve expected. It was a child, nervous and afraid, especially so upon viewing Eve's mutilated face and body. The woman's tattered ears flitted back, an uncertain look crossing the Tauro's visage as she took a step back hesitantly. Th girl answered her, voice trembling with fright. A deep feeling of sadness washed over the dusty golden wolfdog; that was the reality she was forced to live with now, and until the day she died. Eve tried to shake the feeling of unease that came with the fascinated, disgusted, horrified looks that filled the eyes of those around her, but it was unshakable. It hurt her especially with children - she had always had a fondness for them, their little wonder-filled minds so innocent and carefree. She remembered her own youth fondly, warm and peaceful times before everything had been turned upside down.

Eve cleared her throat, single seaside eye focusing on the child before her. "M-my name is Eve," the woman introduced in a somewhat nervous but gentle voice, trying to soothe the young one. "I know I look, ah, scary," that was one word for it, "but I'm not mean, I promise." It was always difficult, but sometimes the children were fascinated with her scars once they realized she wasn't some big bad monster that was going to eat them up. Hopefully this was one of those times.

To further make the girl relax, Eve laid down, hind legs laid out to her right side. "What's your name?" Eve asked in a soft, curious tone, her tail wagging lazily from side to side behind her. She was certainly a cute little kid, and the colors on her pelt made Eve think that perhaps she was related to the royal family. They seemed to sport the same shades. The Tauro waited patiently for the youth to answer, having no intentions whatsoever of pressing the child for information. That simply would not do, would it? She would come around in her own time, or she wouldn't - that was up to the child.

"M-my name is Eve."

It was immediate, like someone suddenly flicking on a light to erase the darkness. The young girl's eyebrows furrowed, and she raised her head up to look at Eve more clearly. Her head cocked as she contemplated the older figure, who's voice held no aggression or any reason to instill fear into the child. In fact it was...nervous, uneasy, quite like how Ahsoka had felt at the initial sighting of the scarred female. There was also a gentleness about the woman, which caused Ahsoka's hackles to start lowering.

"I know I look, ah, scary, but I'm not mean, I promise."

The girl started to straighten up, crawling out of her timid stature. Her ears perked back up, muscles relaxing as the female moved to lay down, splaying out in what was an obvious non-threatening gesture. The girl decided to follow suit, making herself comfortable in the spot she was in. She only sat however, because she was too interested in this woman to put herself in a leisure position. Her fear was fading to be replaced by curiosity.

"What's your name?"

The girl gave the woman a small smile, straightening up more in her sitting position. "My name's Ahsoka. What's yours?" She felt the pulling need to know more about the scarred female. With all those scars, she must have so many stories to tell, so many experiences to share. But it was then that a wave of guilt flowed over the girl, thinking back to Eve's reaction toward Ahsoka's timid demeanor. She didn't want to make anyone unhappy, but it seemed she had. She'd just never seen anyone with so many scars before, so how was she suppose to react at this first sighting? But that was no excuse....

Ears drooping again, she looked down to her paws, shuffling them against the frost bitten ground. "...I'm sorry about how I reacted earlier. I didn't mean to make you sad...you do seem really nice." Looking up again, her poppy eyes connected with Eve, head cocking again as she leaned forward, though slightly uncertain with her next question. She wasn't sure if it would be a question that would further Eve's unhappiness or not, but it was eating away at Ahsoka's curiosity. Besides, if this could happen to a wolf...she needed to be prepared. "How...How did you get them? If it's okay to ask....

The valkyrie's efforts to soothe the youth seemed to pay off. Slowly the red girl began to ease closer almost cautiously. Eve was somewhat proud of that; it paid to be cautious of danger, and Eve - a mutilated, scary-looking stranger - could have definitely been a threat. Instead the golden wolfdog sat at the opposite end of the spectrum, a guardian of the innocent. Ahsoka had nothing to fear.

"My name's Ahsoka. What's yours?"

"Eve. It's nice to meet you, Ahsoka." The Tauro offered a small smile, turning her head so that her more mutilated side was mostly obscured. "...I'm sorry about how I reacted earlier. I didn't mean to make you sad...you do seem really nice." Eve chuckled softly, giving her head a little shake. "It's quite alright, really. Looking like I do, you get use to certain reactions." The wolfdog's words were true; after the tenth or eleventh startled and horrified reaction, Eve had learned to live with the fact that she would be seeing that sort of thing for the rest of her life. It didn't matter much to her with adults - but scaring the children drove a thorn into her heart.

"How...How did you get them? If it's okay to ask...."

Ah, the inevitable question, and yet another thing that she had learned to live with. Eve had briefly contemplated starting to spin as many tall tales as she could about how she obtained the numerous marks upon her body - it would be fun to watch everyone try to untangle the knots and find the truth. That required a certain amount of social interaction that Eve simply was not interested in, though. The girl had at least been polite about it, if not a little hasty. She couldn't fault Ahsoka for it, though - children were like that. "Well," she began, deciding to humor the young girl's curiosity. "I got the ones on my back, my brands, from the humans in the man village where I was born."

A thought occured to the woman, causing her to pause for a moment, single eye focusing on Ahsoka. "Do you know what a human is?" Eve had not encountered a human in Gemini during her time there, but that wasn't to say that there weren't any. They were a strange kind of animal that did very unusual things, but Eve had to admit that she sometimes missed the comforts they brought.

The more time spent with Eve, the more at ease Ahsoka felt. This was a prime example of the saying "looks aren't everything". There was more to a character beyond their exterior, and Eve's appearance certainly didn't match what was held within, as far as the young girl could see. The older she-wolf had given her nothing but kindness and reassurance thus far, and the girl felt herself warming up to the woman.

"Eve. It's nice to meet you, Ahsoka."

"Nice to meet you too, Eve," the girl said, smile lifting and poppy eyes brightening. The hesitation she felt in her voice earlier was dissipating, being replaced by a new wave of confidence. She had been cautious before, but it was now evident that, indeed, Ahsoka had nothing to fear from the scarred female.

After her apology, she was relieved to hear more reassurance from Eve. "It's quite alright, really. Looking like I do, you get use to certain reactions." A thought occurred to her then, but she didn't say it out loud, lest she provoke anymore unhappiness from Eve. The thought of growing used to seeing the same terrified, shocked expressions when others looked at you...it was a thought that was hard to comprehend for the child, but it made her feel uncomfortable. Ahsoka knew she didn't want anyone else to look at her that way, but apparently Eve had no choice on her end. Other wolves would look at Eve that way, and continue to give the older woman the same expressions that Ahsoka bestowed upon her only mere moments ago. The young princess suddenly felt empathetic toward Eve, and felt the urge to do something for the elder woman...but what, she had no clue.

"Well, I got the ones on my back, my brands, from the humans in the man village where I was born."

A cock of the head at the mention of the words "humans" and "village," the girl's bangs flopping at the movement.

"Do you know what a human is?"

The princess shook her head in response, eyes widened in bewilderment. "No, what is a...hu-man?" She drew out the strange, foreign word, letting it roll from her maw. Her curiosity heightened, subconsciously leaning forward in anticipation of Eve's reply.

ooc: Just realized I goofed on the last post and made Eve introduce herself twice haha. Sorry about that!
