Pain.

It pulsed through his being. All encompassing. Nothing else mattered as he forced his way forward, limping slowly through the grass. The wolf’s movements slowed as he came upon this new territory, and halted at once, altogether. Green eyes glazed over with pain took things in for a moment before he let his legs buckle and he fell into the grass, a heaving sigh wracking his body. It rattled in his chest.

The grass poked uncomfortably at the dark wolf’s body as he lay prone, the scent of blood emanating from him. The massive wound on his flank, ugly, gaping was like staring into the abyss and dried blood caked around it. Silas had tried to treat the wound himself. He was a doctor, dammit, but infection had settled, keeping it from healing completely, and he hadn’t found the necessary herbs to keep it at bay.

He gave a groan, settling his cheek into the grass and listening to the sounds around him. He still wasn’t sure what had drawn him to this place. Perhaps, in time, he would be able to gather his energy enough to wander further into the packlands. There was something…but he couldn’t quite place a paw on it. An energy. A scent of something…or someone. He wasn’t sure, and the white hot pain that came with moving wasn’t making thinking a viable option.

So he laid still, the only time the pain didn’t threaten to make him lose his senses.

He didn’t like this though, feeling so vulnerable. Silas was hyper aware of everything around him, ready to leap to his feet at any given second. Truthfully, he didn’t have much fight in him these days. He hadn’t eaten much. He’d never been that great of a hunter, mostly surviving on a diet of snakes and other slower moving creatures. The scraggly furred, undernourished beast was not the same creature that’d emerged from the Saboran jungle all those moons ago.

It was clear that, while he hated almost everyone, Silas needed to belong somewhere.

The dire hybrid had spent endless hours around the borders recently. Francisca's meeting had rendered her a bit on edge, and it was fast becoming the only place in the packlands where she felt at ease. Where she felt she was being useful. Occasionally, Livid would question why. Why did she bother with pack life? Not only did it mean that she now had something to lose, something to worry about, but it meant she was forever bound by her loyalty to the Queen and the other Rangers, despite feeling no real connection with any of them. Of course, she had felt something - she was not quite sure what - with Anky but they had not spoken for a while. Livid had tried going to the caves they had discovered together to try and see if he was there but there was never any sign of him.

Shame.

In some messed up way that she could never admit, Livid missed the fish-tailed hellhound.

She was just about to call it a day and check the caves one more time for him when she scented blood. Initially, she thought she had imagined it or maybe somebody had made a kill close by. The arrival of a slight breeze and a stronger smell confirmed that the smell was coming from across the border in front of her. The Ranger started forward, the smell overwhelming her now. Somebody was hurt. It did not take her long to find the source. A scrawny black wolf, a male, lying on his side. Livid spotted the source of the smell immediately: a wound on his flank, gaping and infected. Well, goddamnit.

"Hey, you're on the borders of Gemini. You have a name, tough guy?" the Ranger asked the wolf sternly, before remembering that she should be a bit more compassionate. "Try not to move for the time being, that injury looks bad. Don't worry, though, I won't hurt you."

A quick sniff confirmed that the injury was not healing well and needed treatment. Well, fuck. Livid was no herbalist. Where she came from - the far North - there was hardly any plant life to be found, so herbs had been the one thing that her knowledge database had not logged. Perhaps this stranger would know one or two things? Whether or not he would respond to her offer for help with hostility, she would huff and stand her ground. "Look, I can fetch you herbs to treat that wound and maybe some food but you're going to need to describe what you need," she told the wolf. "I'll do my best to find what you want."

Also, we're both gonna demonstrate one thing during this meeting: teamwork.

She wants the silence but fears the solitude
She wants to be alone and together with you
So she ran to the lighthouse, hoped that it would help her see
She saw that the lighthouse had been washed out to sea
