She was beginning to think that maybe she had taken a wrong turn. It had been a day since she decided to turn right over the mountains, and still there was no sign of the river. Henbane, in all her glorious wisdom, decided to take what she thought would be a shortcut. As the crow flies, her father always said. She couldn’t very well sprout wings though, so her only choice had been to climb. However, that was proving to not be the best idea. All Henbane could see was a vast expanse of land. The rolling hills touched the darkening horizon of twilight with no river in sight. At least not any that were familiar to her.
The small brown mutt peered closer at the surroundings below, and in the vast prairie there was a verdant patch of green. The westward winds blew with them a familiar scent of a border. She had grown up near one while still a pup where her father would visit. The smells made her feel nostalgic, even if they were the same pack of her childhood. Maybe they could help her? Her father had always warned her about approaching these borders and the wolves within them. He had been exiled for his tryst with her mother, and so she could understand his reservations. There wasn’t much choice though. She had been so preoccupied with trying to get back to her family that her body was wasting away. She had been hungry before that fateful fall into the river, but now she was starving.
Carefully Henbane slid down the rolling mountain hill as the night breeze sent a chill through her dusty fur. Only when making it to the base of the mountain had she realized how far off the green place seamed. She could still smell the borders, although it was fainter now. Even though her muscles were tight with exhaustion Henbane pressed forward in a dash across the vast expanse. Although weakened Henbane almost enjoyed her run, now unhindered by the claustrophobic aura of the mountain passages. She flew across the flat lands towards the smell of the borders, the sun finally shrinking behind the mountains she had traversed. As she ran Henbane let out yips and howls to announcing her presence to any in the area.
