In Dire Straits

Whatever haunts Saboro, it appears to hide in the mountains. It hides in caves and moves through tunnel systems, perhaps seeking refuge from the snow that continues to settle outside. The black blood continues to turn up here and there in the snow, it’s foul stench continues to linger.

One night, all hell breaks loose.

The Saborans can wake up to their world shaking, an eruption of events that could end in catastrophe. A herd of a hundred charge down from the mountains above, a stampede of rams that bleed black from their eyes, nose and mouth. The snow to the left of them begins to collapse in its structure, falling and tumbling down below in an avalanche. But the herd don't seem to realise, their focus seems confused and muddled as the herd splits and heads in multiple directions.

A good number get swept up in the avalanche, others trip and fall and are then trampled to death by the rest. Once everything has settled, there is only a small group remaining. Around 6 rams are all that remain of the hundred; the rest buried in a frozen grave or left as mangled carcasses on the mountainside. But the 6 that remain are still dangerous, attacking each other and anything that comes close.

Something lurks up near where the avalanche had originated; a huge hulking figure covered in dense fur that lets out a challenging roar before making its move to leave.

The noise of a stampede was engraved into the depths of the girl’s memory banks and it was not a good one. Raising herself up in a jolt and heavy breathing panic, she looked out the entrance of the den and felt like the world was shaking. Normally this would have spooked the ex-princess into remaining where she was, but instead she felt a growing concern within her heart for casualties or pack mates in need of help.

She didn’t know the cause or the purpose, but nothing good ever came from a hoard of spooked herbivores.

Leaping up and out of the entrance, it was easy to determine the exact location of the catastrophe. Followed with it greatly was the cloud of white snow-smoke along the mountainside, very evident of an avalanche that occurred from the earth-rumbling herd. Cassiopeia felt panicked but in the strangest, calm way she'd ever felt before, unsure as to who might’ve been anywhere near the collapsing snow. Her tiny heart pounding and she opted for bravely inspecting it anyway, using her nose and her ears to bring her to the scene.

As she got closer she felt like she’d hit a wall of stench, halting in her tracks as she exhaled a gagging cough. Her eyes squinted with a mild sting as she tried to survey the damages, the distant sound of bellowing was her indicator for something still happening.

Cassiopeia’s concern grew as she got closer and didn’t see many faces, familiar or not. Reactively, she raised her head to the sky as she continued to run toward the commotion, howling a strained, sweet melodic tone to summon anyone who may not have already been on their way as well. It wasn’t a strong howl by any means coming from the throat of a soft-spoken creature such as herself, but it was something.

Distant huffing was heard and she turned her course toward the lake, upon there she saw a small group of incredibly haunting looking rams. Black blood was strewn across them, oozing from their noses, eyes, mouth— Something absolutely out of a nightmare. Cassiopeia came to a shuddering halt, freezing in place and staring at the beasts with wide eyes.

She wasn’t sure if they’d seen her yet, but she tried to glance around without causing too much movement. It felt like a trap, being unable to move without being charged but being concerned for any in need of help closer to the mountain. Gritting her teeth, she remembered the day her father nearly died due to her negligence, due to the fear that consumed her.

Not again, never again.

Cassiopeia stared down the aggressive beasts, waiting for an opportune moment before leaping to the side and trying to run passed them. One of them caught sight of her plan and turned it’s attention to her, huffing and spewing blood from its flaring nostrils in preparation to charge.

Having heard this, the moment dainty paws made contact to the ground again she froze, resuming her stare down. “No… no, no..” She barely spoke to herself, ears pinned back, locking eyes and swallowing her fear.
