Rank Descriptions

Sky Council

First Dog
The First Dog of Ayris is the Arysian pack alpha rank. This dog leads the pack, manages its ranks and members, writes the rules, and makes all the big decisions. The First Dog may delegate tasks to other members, but whoever holds this rank has the final say on all matters. The First Dog is the only one who can overrule a Ranger's or the First Ranger's decision to admit or deny someone admittance into Ayris, and is the only Ayrisian who can accept a wolf into Ayris as an honorary dog.
Ayrisian Title: "First Dog Puffin of Ayris", or "Puffin, First Dog of Ayris"

First Ranger
The First Ranger of Ayris heads the Ayrisian Rangers and oversees not only the training for all members of the rank but also all the upkeep of all outposts and patrol routes. It's the First Ranger's job to know not only the state of Ayris' borders, but state of the land beyond as well. The Ayrisian Rangers are their eyes and ears outside the territory, and keep a meticulous log of who or what is found on each patrol to the outside outposts.
The First Ranger also sits on the Sky Council, a council that helps the First Dog manage Ayris and oversee all pack activities. The Council keeps the First Dog abreast of all pack happenings and provides opinions and advice on important matters. As a member of the Sky Council, the First Ranger is Ayrisian nobility.
Ayrisian Title: "First Ranger Puffin of Ayris" or "Puffin, First Ranger of Ayris"

First Guardian
The First Guardian of Ayris heads the Ayrisian Guardians and oversees not only the training for all members of the rank but also the upkeep of their fighting ability. They are responsible for scheduling the Guardians' shifts watching over the Aerie and Whitecliff Outpost, maintaining Ayris' overall security, and making sure no outsiders find the Aerie.

First Jack
The First Jack of Ayris heads the Ayrisian Jacks and oversees not only the training for all members of the rank but also all the Jacks' academic pursuits. The First Jack decides who may train to be a Jack and when that training is complete. They set the standards for medical knowledge required to become a full fledged Jack, maintain the pack's inventory of supplies for both healing and crafting, determine when trips should be made to find or trade for more materials and who goes on those trips, approve or deny individual Jacks' requests to leave the territory on trips of their own, work with the First Ranger to make sure all outposts are fully stocked with medical supplies, and set goals for Ayris' acquisition of knowledge. The First Jack can also double as a dean of academic studies, so to speak.

The Flock

Rangers
The Ayrisan Rangers are the face of Ayris. They are border guards, sentries, scouts, messengers, ambassadors, merchants, seekers, agents, and even spies if need be. They maintain Ayris' borders and outposts, work with the Jacks to keep the outposts stocked, assist travelers with directions or aid, maintain Ayris' ties with allies, and keep an eye out for Nardiri survivors. Because some Ayrisian outposts stretch beyond Ayris' territory, patrols to those outposts are scheduled by the First Ranger, and only experienced Rangers are deployed on those patrols. Rangers may leave the territory on personal missions, but may not do so without first informing the First Ranger where they intend to go and for how long. Rangers who do not return within the allotted time will have search parties sent out for them.
As border guards, Rangers handle all of Ayris' acceptances. This is the only rank that may take acceptances. Rangers must have a keen insight into those who request entry into the pack, and may accept only those with dog blood. Wolfdogs that are 50% or more dog may be accepted; wolfdogs that are less than half dog must have the First Dog's approval to join Ayris. Pure wolves and wolfdogs that are less than half dog may not become Ayrisian Rangers.
Ayrisian Title: "Ranger Puffin of Ayris" or "Puffin, Ranger of Ayris"

Guardians
The Ayrisian Guardians are the pack's military. Their main duty is to guard the Aerie and Whitecliff Outpost, but they may also accompany Rangers on patrol or on missions outside the territory. Should a Ranger call for help at the border, the Guardians should answer that call. Guardians may also be called upon to assist the Jacks with projects that require strength, or trips that could use some muscle. Wolves and wolfdogs accepted into Ayris are usually placed into this rank for their size and strength, though smaller dogs and wolfdogs may also hold the rank for their fighting ability.
Ayrisian Title: "Guardian Puffin of Ayris" or "Puffin, Guardian of Ayris"

Jacks
The Ayrisian Jacks are the scholars of Ayris, trained first to be healers and medics and then taught a little bit of everything: herbalism, botany, alchemy, craftsmanship, smithing, architecture, astronomy, literature, etc. An Ayrisian Jack is meant to be a jack of all trades, collector of knowledge, academic and librarian. Their training is considered complete when they master the art of healing and become competent doctors and medics, but from there they may study any field they see fit. The Ayrisian Jacks are made up of crafters and artisans of different specialities, and academic minds always interested in learning something new. They are the ones who are called upon to tend to the sick and wounded as well as stock the outposts with healing herbs, tools and supplies, but they are also known to accompany Rangers on trips to procure new materials or on mercantile journeys to other packs.
It's common for a Jack's quest for materials or knowledge to lead them outside the territory, but they must always have the First Jack's permission to go, and a Ranger or Guardian (or both) to accompany them.
Ayrisian Title: "Jack Puffin of Ayris" or "Puffin, Jack of Ayris"

The Nest

Elders
Elders are Ayrisians who are no longer physically able to perform the duties of their rank, usually due to old age. They make excellent storytellers, historians, and sources of advice, however. Some may even babysit, if they so choose. However, because of the difficult climb down from the Aerie, Elders who wish to venture down must be accompanied by a Guardian or Ranger at all times.
Ayrisian Title: "Elder Puffin of Ayris" or "Puffin, Elder of Ayris"

Civilians
Civilians are average citizens of Ayris. They are either newly accepted members of the pack or aged up into adulthood, and lack the training to claim a rank in the Flock. Civilians can still serve the pack by assisting Jacks or Guardians with their work or by hunting, but before too long they should seek out training for a rank.
Dogs newly accepted into Ayris are taken to Whitecliff Outpost, where they live until they choose a rank to train for and complete that training. Ayris guards the location of the Aerie very carefully, and thus only ranked members, elders, and children born into the pack know its location.
Ayrisian Title: none

Children
Children are Ayrisians too young to leave the Aerie to train for a rank. They should be under supervision at all times for their safety.

In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.

When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.

We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.
